Reamping tools give a lot of choice if going down that route. I would rather get tubes to do their thing, and there are alternative ways to get clean boost or eq if you need that. The other use was for people with tube amps who mainly used them as a midrange boost, on the cleanest setting but with plenty of gain to push the first tube into heavier saturation. One was because solid state amps in the day sounded like crap, and these made them sound ok by creating some distortion. I think there are two reasons why these pedals became so popular. No idea what chip is in that, but it won't be anything rare or expensive. It has a little more noise, but I sort of prefer the tone. It's clearly a TS9 ripoff, but it has slightly wider range.

The crazy thing is that I heard somebody in a guitar shop playing through a cheap chinese pedal and it sounded amazing so I bought it. Seems about the same as I remember but with less noise. A few years ago I bought an Analogman modified one with the good chip and everything. I owned a TS9 back in the day - not sure why I sold it. The main advantage of the boutique clones is that they use good resistors which reduces the hiss level. Seriously, build a clone or buy one of the zillion good boutique overdrives out there and do NOT pay a ton of money for one. But if you REALLY want to pay boutique prices for one? I'll sell you mine. I've played with boutique ones, clones, and built some. Go buy some new ones - they're like $.45. The old chips are not different than the later chips - they just changed the name/number designation on them. Can anyone attest to their sound quality? However, I also noticed a few other pedals with the same exact layout, such as the Ibanez MS10 and the Ibanez SML, though the SML supposedly only uses two of those chips and the MS10 is claimed to be identical to the SM9.Īre these just jewels waiting to be uncovered by afficianados after the vintage TS9 tone, or am I missing something? There's one SM9 on the bay, and three MS10s. I'm seeing the Ibanez SM-9 in a few conversations, and noticed that they talk about the JRC4558D chips in it, like the venerable TS9s had.
